Some investigators feel that salicylates act through an effect on pituitary-adrenal function, producing therapeutic effects in inflammation and rheumatic fever by steroid release. Salicylates may block the destruction of cortisone and thus potentiate its action. Salicylates affect carbohydrate metabolism. In both an¢¥mals and man, large doses of salicylates may cause hyperglycemia and glycosuria, and deplete liver and muscle glycogen; those effects are explained mainly by the release of epinephrine, presumably through activation of hypothalamic sympathetic centers.
In this paper, the author attempted to investigate the interactions of exogenous epinephrine and sodium salicylate on the metabolism in rabbits. The mutual effects of epinephrine and sodium salicylate on the blood sugar level, serum transaminase (GOT, GPT) activities, serum alkaline phosphatase activities, blood Ca and Mg contents in albino rabbits were estimated.
The results obtained were as follows;
1. The hyperglycemic effect of epinephrine was inhibited by pretreatment of sodium salicylate, however the hyperglycemic effect of sodium salicylate was augmented by pretreatment of epinephrine.
2. The increased serum transaminase activities induced by epinephrine were inhibited by pretreatment of sodium salicylate.
3. The increased serum alkaline phosphatase activity induced by epinephrine was inhibited by pretreatment of sodium salicylate.
4. The reduced serum Mg or increased serum Ca contents induced by epinephrine were antagonized by pretreatment of sodium salicylate.
